Stress Reliever- Is It True?

At any given moment we have hundreds of thoughts going through our head. When things are going well, the vast majority of them are happy thoughts. When we are struggling we often find our thoughts to be stress ridden and fear based. And for that matter, even when things are going well, we get stressed out, angry, or disappointed with people in our lives or situations in our live and let those stressful thoughts to take over and grow.  What do you do when you believe your fearful thoughts? How do you move back into a more loving and gentle space?

One of my go-to stress reliever’s is The Work of Byron Katie. It’s a relatively simple yet profound process where you inquire on your stressful thoughts to see if they are true or not. It is often our thoughts about a person or experience that are causing our suffering, rather than the actual person or experience.

Moving forward, I invite you to inquire on your stressful thoughts by doing the work:

  1. Is it true? (yes or no, if no – move to question 3). Example: My boss doesn’t respect me.  Is it true? Yes!
  2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true? (yes or no). Example of boss. It could still be a yes if I’m in a heated moment thinking about my boss. However, as I inquire on it being ‘absolutely’ true, I might come up with an example of him being respectful.
  3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought? Example boss: I’m upset, frustrated, feeling defeated, etc.
  4. Who would you be without that thought? Example boss: Calm, happier, feeling like part of the team.

Then there is the turnaround where you take the stressful statement and you turn it around on you, to the other, or make it the opposite. Example boss: I disrespect myself. I disrespect my boss. My boss does respect me. Then you look for those example.  Give it a try and see how the work allows you to return to your truth of love.

If you would like to try out the work, join me on the 2nd Tuesday’s of each month as a certified facilitator of the work, Paul Zavagno, leads our “Let’s Talk” hour-long discussion. Details HERE.

Until next time, your true work is to love yourself, others, and the world.
